The closest town to Howscales Holiday Cottages is the traditional town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, famous for the annual Gypsy & Traveller horse fayre that has been held there for over 300 years. The quaint market town of Penrith is also nearby and the Lakeland town of Keswick, renowned for its dog-friendliness and its propensity of outdoor shops as well as the Cumberland Rexell Pencil Museum and The Puzzling Place, great fun for all the family.

The Settle-Carlisle railway, the most scenic railway in England, runs through the Eden Valley, with stations at Lazonby, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen. Hop on and take a ride while you are here. The historic Border City of Carlisle has many attractions, eating places and shopping.

There are various trails to be explored such as Eden Food Trail, Great Outdoors Trail, Heritage Trail, Art and Culture Trail, River Eden Trail, Yellow Jersey Cycling Loop, Family Cycling Trail plus many more. During the year there are also several festivals, country and craft fairs, farmers' markets, and traditional agricultural shows.

Indulge in or try out a new activity: there are many opportunities for golf, horse riding and fishing, photography or painting. All this and delightful scenery to explore by foot, bicycle or car.

Stray a little way out of the Valley and you can be in the beautiful Eastern Lake District, the delightful Yorkshire Dales or the rugged North Pennines. To the north you can visit Hadrian's Wall and head into Border country, maybe even visiting Scotland for the day.
