squirrelHowscales is surrounded by open countryside, rivers and moorland making it a haven for bird watchers and wildlife lovers alike.

Swallows are a delight to watch as they build their nests in the open barn and many pheasants and partridges visit the garden, too.

Whilst red squirrels haven't been seen in garden at Howscales recently, occasional sightings have been made in the hamlet of Parkhead, the village of Renwick and alongside Raven Beck between Parkhead and Kirkoswald village. There is an initiative currently underway, led by Kirkoswald Environmental Group, to attract red squirrels back to the area. As part of this initiative Howscales set up a squirrel feeder and camera. Unfortunately no sightings were caught on film and the camera has now been resighted at an area where red squirrels were reported to have been seen.

If you like to find out more about this initiative please visit and look under KEG Projects and News.
